Brisa-owned Via Verde has unveiled a fresh pricing structure for its electronic tolling and mobility services, set to take effect on April 10. The adjustments will nudge subscription fees upward across most plan tiers, with some users facing an annual increase of up to €3—a shift that could quietly compound the rising cost of vehicle ownership in Portugal.

Why This Matters

Subscription fees rise across the board: The Via Verde Mobility annual plan jumps from €20.49 to €23.49, while the Mobility Light monthly option climbs from €2.09 to €2.49.

Timing and consolidation: The price hike arrives following Brisa's acquisition of full ownership of Via Verde, completed on March 5, 2026. Brisa had previously acquired a stake held by SIBS in 2021, and completed the buyout of Ascendi's remaining 25% stake to achieve 100% ownership.

No alternative systems: Via Verde remains the only electronic tolling platform compatible with every Portuguese highway, meaning drivers have limited recourse if they want to skip toll queues.

New Rates for Every Subscription Tier

Via Verde's updated fee schedule, now visible on the company's official website, spreads modest increases across its three main service categories. For Autoestrada subscribers—those who use the transponder strictly for highway tolls—the monthly fee edges up by one cent, moving from €1.03 to €1.04. Annual subscribers will pay €12.39 instead of €12.25, a 14-cent bump. Drivers who opt into electronic billing continue to secure the steepest discount, locking in a 54-cent monthly rate that remains unchanged.

The Mobilidade plan, which bundles highway tolls with urban parking, fuel-station checkouts, and other mobility services, sees a more pronounced shift. Monthly subscribers will now be charged €1.99, up from €1.75—a 24-cent monthly increase. Those paying annually face a jump from €20.49 to €23.49, representing the highest euro value rise in the new schedule. For frequent city drivers who rely on integrated parking and fuel payments, this translates to roughly €0.25 more per month or a cumulative €3 over a year.

Mobilidade Leve, a flexible rental model designed for intermittent users, absorbs the sharpest percentage hike. The monthly fee climbs from €2.09 to €2.49, marking a 20–25% increase. Under the revised math, anyone using the service for five months or more within a calendar year will find it cheaper to switch to an annual Mobility subscription. Previously, that break-even threshold sat at six months. Drivers who only need the tag for summer road trips or occasional travel should double-check whether the light plan still suits their pattern.

Meanwhile, accessory pricing holds steady: adhesive windscreen strips and transponder pouches carry the same retail figures as before.

Brisa's Full Takeover and Market Position

The rate adjustment lands following Brisa Autoestradas de Portugal's acquisition of full ownership of Via Verde. With the deal closed on March 5, 2026, the Brisa group now owns 100% of Via Verde's share capital. The acquisition received regulatory notification to the Portuguese Competition Authority (AdC) and underwent review by relevant authorities, including the central bank given Via Verde's ownership of Via Verde Pay, a payment institution supervised by the Banco de Portugal.

Brisa had been gradually assembling full control for years. In 2021, it acquired the stake held by SIBS, Portugal's interbank services network, leaving only Ascendi's quarter-share standing between Brisa and outright ownership. The transaction to acquire the remaining stake was notified to the AdC in March 2025, with the acquisition itself completed on March 5, 2026.

Via Verde operates as the primary electronic tolling system across Portugal's entire highway network. No competing platform offers universal coverage, meaning drivers who prefer cashless lanes have limited alternatives. Brisa itself controls approximately 1,100 km of motorway concessions through its principal subsidiary, Brisa Concessão Rodoviária, under a contract that runs until 2035.

What This Means for Drivers and Commuters

For most Portuguese households, the Via Verde subscription sits alongside fuel, insurance, maintenance, and parking as a fixed line item in the monthly car budget. While a €3 annual increase may sound modest in isolation, it stacks onto a broader inflationary environment for vehicle ownership. Diesel and petrol prices have climbed intermittently over the past year, and several municipalities have raised on-street parking tariffs.

Drivers should audit their current plan against actual usage patterns. If you rarely venture beyond highway tolls, the Autoestrada tier with electronic billing remains the most economical choice at 54 cents per month. Urban commuters who frequently top up at partner fuel stations or park in Via Verde–enabled garages will still find value in the Mobility bundle, even at €23.49 per year. But occasional users—particularly those enrolled in Mobilidade Leve—may discover that the revised monthly rate no longer justifies keeping the service active year-round.

Planning Ahead

The new pricing takes effect April 10, giving current subscribers roughly four weeks to evaluate their contracts. Via Verde typically processes plan changes through its website or customer-service centers, and switching between tiers mid-year is allowed. Anyone on an annual billing cycle should check their renewal date to confirm when the revised rates will apply.

Drivers who signed up years ago and have since changed commuting patterns—remote workers who no longer drive daily, for instance—may find that dropping down to Autoestrada or canceling altogether saves more than the headline price increase would cost. Conversely, heavy users of urban parking who remain on the basic Autoestrada plan could unlock savings by consolidating fuel and parking payments under the Mobility tier, despite the higher subscription fee.

The April adjustments represent a incremental cost increase for most users, underscoring the importance of reviewing subscription expenses regularly to ensure your plan aligns with current driving needs and usage patterns.
