Two Young People Die After Car Plunges into Penafiel Reservoir
The Portugal National Republican Guard (GNR) is investigating the deaths of two young people whose car plunged into a waterlogged reservoir in Penafiel. The vehicle was found fully submerged in a water channel in Lugar de Barco, Paço de Sousa parish, with both occupants—a man and a woman aged between 20 and 25—still trapped inside.
Discovery and Emergency Response
Workers passing through Travessa de Barco on the morning of March 24 spotted the submerged vehicle and raised the alarm just after 9:00 AM. The Paço de Sousa Volunteer Fire Brigade had just returned from another emergency when the call came in, according to commander João Pinto. Firefighters arrived to find the car completely underwater in the reservoir, which had overflowed with recent rainfall and accumulated sediment.
More than 20 emergency personnel responded to the scene, including units from the Paço de Sousa Volunteer Fire Brigade, the Emergency Medical and Resuscitation Vehicle (VMER), the GNR, and Civil Protection. Initial assessments confirmed that both victims died inside the vehicle, but treacherous conditions—deep water mixed with dense mud—prevented immediate extraction of the bodies or the wreckage.
Commander Pinto confirmed that the car appeared to have veered off the road, rolled over, and plummeted into the water channel. Residents in the surrounding area reported hearing nothing unusual during the night or early morning, suggesting the accident may have occurred hours before discovery.
Investigation Status
The Criminal Investigation Unit of Porto has taken over the inquiry into the circumstances of the crash. Forensic teams are working to recover the vehicle and examine the accident scene. Autopsies will be conducted to establish the cause of death.
Authorities have not yet identified the victims publicly, pending notification of next of kin. The investigation is ongoing.
Local Context
This is the second fatal accident in Penafiel's rural network in less than six months. In October 2025, a 71-year-old man was fatally struck on National Highway 106 (EN 106) in Cabeça Santa. Local officials have long raised concerns about road safety on secondary routes in the municipality, citing factors such as inadequate lighting, narrow lanes, and poor drainage conditions.
For residents of Paço de Sousa and surrounding parishes, the tragedy highlights the ongoing need for improved safety measures on rural roads that many navigate daily.
