Published 1h ago

A truck overturned and blocked both directions of the A19 motorway in Leiria early Wednesday morning, leaving one person seriously injured. The Portugal Civil Protection Authority coordinated the emergency response after the incident occurred directly in front of the Leiria shopping center.

Emergency Response and Traffic Disruption

The alarm was raised at 00:59 when the heavy goods vehicle lost control and toppled over, sprawling across the northbound and southbound lanes of the A19. Five emergency personnel and three vehicles were dispatched to the scene to extract the injured driver, who was rushed to hospital with serious injuries. The condition of the victim has not been publicly disclosed.

Clearing the wreckage proved time-consuming. The overturned truck obstructed the entire roadway, forcing a complete closure while crews worked through the night to remove the vehicle and clean debris from the asphalt. The road remained obstructed at 06:00, according to official reports, though the exact time of full reopening has not been confirmed.

The Portugal National Republican Guard (GNR) managed traffic diversions during the closure. Standard procedure in such cases involves investigation of the accident scene, though authorities have not yet released information regarding the cause of the crash.
