Motorcycle Rider Dies in Crash on Ponte 25 de Abril

A motorcycle rider was killed in a collision with a truck on the Ponte 25 de Abril Friday morning, closing the bridge's southbound lanes during peak commuting hours and affecting thousands of residents traveling between the south bank and Lisbon.

Emergency responders received the alert at 7:42 AM near the Pragal entrance to the bridge. Ten emergency personnel arrived with four vehicles and worked to clear the scene. The southbound lanes remained closed while authorities documented the incident and removed the vehicles involved.

By 8:30 AM, authorities reopened one southbound lane, allowing traffic to resume at reduced capacity. Commuters from Almada, Seixal, and Costa da Caparica faced significant delays as traffic backed up through residential areas of Cacilhas and Pragal. With no alternative major crossing nearby, many drivers experienced 40 to 60 additional minutes added to their morning commutes.

The Ponte 25 de Abril remains critical infrastructure for the region, handling the bulk of daily traffic between the south bank and central Lisbon. The incident highlights how a single closure affects thousands of residents' ability to reach workplaces, schools, and other essential destinations across the Tagus.

Authorities continue investigating the collision. The name and age of the deceased rider have not yet been released.
