Portuguese Maritime Police officers deployed to the Greek island of Gavdos have rescued 39 migrants from a vessel in the eastern Mediterranean, as part of Frontex's Joint Operation Greece 2026. The operation was conducted at the request of Greek authorities near Gavdos, a remote island that has become a key point in migration patrols.
The group rescued consisted of 38 men and one woman, all reported to be in good physical condition. No medical assistance was required. The migrants were safely transferred to another vessel and handed over to Greek authorities.
This rescue is one of many carried out by Portugal’s contingent as part of its ongoing participation in Frontex operations in Greek waters. The deployment, authorized in January 2026, continues Portugal’s long-standing contribution to European border management missions.
The Portuguese Maritime Police have been involved in Frontex operations since 2014, regularly providing personnel and vessels to support maritime surveillance and rescue efforts along Europe’s southern borders.
