The Portugal Judiciary Police detained a 29-year-old man for deliberately setting fire to a Multibanco ATM containing €70,000 at Ameixoeira metro station. The incident occurred on a Tuesday at 21:40, damaging the machine and disrupting cash access for local residents.

The arson targeted a critical financial access point in a residential area where banking options are limited, particularly affecting elderly and low-income users who rely on cash. Authorities have not confirmed any additional prior incidents or specific security upgrade plans beyond reviewing current measures.

The suspect, who had no prior criminal record, has been held in custody. Prosecutors are evaluating the case under Portuguese law, with the act classified as arson due to the deliberate burning of public infrastructure. No motive has been publicly established.

Residents in the neighborhood continue to face challenges accessing cash, with many forced to travel to nearby areas such as Lumiar or Senhor Roubado. Local authorities are urging the public to report any suspicious behaviour near ATMs.

The case highlights growing concerns over the safety and accessibility of public financial infrastructure in Lisbon’s metro network.
