Portugal Seizes Record 2 Million Cocaine Doses in One Week—What It Means for Residents
The Guarda Nacional Republicana confiscated nearly 2 million doses of cocaine during enforcement operations between April 17 and 23, 2026, representing one of the largest weekly cocaine seizures in recent Portuguese law enforcement history.
This Week's Enforcement Operations:
• Record cocaine haul: 1,954,082 cocaine doses seized
• Road safety crackdown: Over 11,000 traffic violations detected, with 412 drunk driving arrests and 256 total alcohol-related detentions
• Arms and cash: Authorities confiscated 29 firearms, 597 rounds of ammunition, 31 vehicles, and €9,381 in suspected drug proceeds
• Other narcotics: 10,211 doses of heroin, 8,366 doses of hashish, 1,216 doses of marijuana, alongside smaller quantities of MDMA, amphetamines, and nine cannabis plants
• Total arrests: 633 individuals detained across various offenses
Breakdown of Enforcement Actions:
While the cocaine seizure represents the most significant drug interdiction of the week, the GNR's operations targeted a broader spectrum of criminal activity. Beyond the 41 arrests for drug trafficking, authorities made 256 arrests for driving under the influence of alcohol — a persistent issue on Portuguese roads.
An additional 120 people were arrested for driving without a valid license, 20 for theft and robbery, 12 for illegal weapons possession, 11 suspects for forest arson — a seasonal concern as Portugal enters the drier months — and nine for domestic violence.
Traffic enforcement yielded 11,134 infractions, including:
• 2,615 speeding violations
• 1,263 failures to maintain mandatory periodic vehicle inspections
• 501 tachograph irregularities
• 413 drivers operating vehicles without mandatory civil liability insurance
• 483 infractions related to faulty lighting and signaling systems
• 385 cases of improper seatbelt use or child restraint violations
• 313 drivers using mobile phones while behind the wheel
The 412 drunk driving arrests resulted from roadside breath tests detecting blood alcohol levels above the legal limit of 0.5 grams per liter.
What This Means for Portuguese Residents:
For drivers, the enforcement data demonstrates the GNR's sustained presence on roads nationwide. The 256 alcohol-related arrests in a single week translate to an average of 36 drunk driving detentions per day, underscoring that impaired driving remains a persistent road safety challenge.
Vehicle owners should note the 1,263 infractions for expired inspection certificates — a violation carrying fines and potentially complicating insurance claims. The 413 cases of uninsured drivers highlight the financial and legal risks of operating a vehicle without proper coverage, which is mandatory under Portuguese law.
The cocaine seizure reflects ongoing enforcement efforts against narcotics trafficking through Portuguese territory. In Portugal's decriminalized drug framework — where personal possession has been decriminalized since 2001 — drug trafficking remains a serious criminal offense with prison sentences for large-scale distribution. This approach allows law enforcement to focus resources on dismantling supply networks rather than prosecuting individual users.
The scale of this week's operations illustrates that both drug trafficking and road safety violations remain persistent challenges requiring sustained enforcement efforts from Portuguese authorities.
