The Portugal National Republican Guard (GNR) has recovered three of four stolen smartphones worth approximately €5,100 from a transport logistics company in Maia. Three suspects have been charged with theft following an investigation that began in December 2025.

The Investigation

The transport company filed a formal complaint after four smartphones were stolen from their facility. The GNR's Maia Territorial Subdivision initiated investigative procedures that eventually led to the identification of three suspects.

This week, authorities executed two residential search warrants in Trofa and Vila Nova de Famalicão. These raids resulted in the recovery of two smartphones valued at approximately €3,400. Officers subsequently identified a 24-year-old male suspect and recovered a third device worth approximately €1,700. One smartphone from the original theft of four remains unaccounted for.

All recovered equipment has been returned to the legitimate owner. The Maia Judicial Court has been notified of the charges, and the case now proceeds through Portugal's judicial system.

Context for Transport Companies

Electronics, particularly smartphones, are frequently targeted in transport sector thefts due to their compact size, significant resale value, and relatively straightforward disposal through online channels. The value of just three phones illustrates why transport companies carrying such cargo require robust security measures.

For businesses in the Porto region's logistics sector, this case demonstrates the importance of maintaining formal records of equipment, promptly reporting thefts to police, and cooperating fully with investigators. The six-month investigation timeline underscores that recovery is possible through persistent law enforcement work, even when initial investigation takes time.
