Stable Collapse Kills Farmer in Vinhais, Northeastern Portugal
A 62-year-old man has died and another remains seriously injured after a stable roof collapsed on them during routine farm work in Vinhais, a municipality in northeastern Portugal. The incident, which took place late in the afternoon, has prompted a safety review by local authorities.
What Happened
The two men—relatives working together—were clearing manure from a stable using a tractor when part of the building's infrastructure sustained damage during the operation. According to Carlos Ferreira, commander of the local emergency response unit, the pair then attempted to address the structural problem themselves. While they were working to fix the issue, the entire roof gave way and fell on top of them.
The older victim, aged 62, was killed in the collapse. His 53-year-old relative survived but sustained serious injuries that required immediate hospitalization. Emergency crews arrived on scene shortly after the alert was raised at approximately 19:30.
Emergency Response
The Portugal National Institute of Medical Emergency (INEM) was alerted and the injured man was transported by ambulance to the hospital in Bragança, the district capital approximately 50 kilometers south of Vinhais. The journey to the regional medical facility took approximately one hour given the mountainous terrain and rural road conditions in the Trás-os-Montes region.
Investigation
Authorities are continuing to investigate the circumstances surrounding the collapse. Key questions include whether the stable structure had any pre-existing weaknesses and whether the tractor operation exceeded safe parameters for the building.
Local authorities in Vinhais have not released the identities of the victims, respecting family privacy during the investigation. The incident will likely be reviewed by the Portuguese Authority for Working Conditions (ACT) to determine the cause and whether any regulatory issues were involved.
