Henrique Rocha reaches career-high ATP ranking of 131st after strong South American performances

Portuguese tennis player Henrique Rocha has climbed 38 positions to world No. 131, his career-best ranking, following victories at the Brasília challenger and a runner-up finish in Santiago. The breakthrough comes as the latest ATP and WTA rankings reflect changes across the professional circuit following Indian Wells.

Nuno Borges, Portugal's highest-ranked male player, dropped five spots to No. 50, while Jaime Faria improved to 157th. On the women's side, Francisca Jorge moved to 190th, maintaining her position as Portugal's top-ranked female player. Her sister Matilde Jorge sits at No. 245.

In doubles, Francisco Cabral slipped two places to 21st after an early Indian Wells exit.

Global Rankings: Rybakina Ascends to No. 2

Elena Rybakina reached world No. 2 for the first time after losing the Indian Wells final to Aryna Sabalenka 3-6, 6-3, 7-6(6). Sabalenka retained the world No. 1 ranking, while Poland's Iga Świątek moved to No. 3.

On the men's side, Spain's Carlos Alcaraz held the world No. 1 ranking, with Italy's Jannik Sinner at No. 2 after winning Indian Wells. Sinner defeated Medvedev in the final, with Medvedev re-entering the top 10 at No. 10.

What the Rankings Mean for Portuguese Players

A top-150 ranking like Rocha's enables direct entry into ATP 250 main draws and improved qualifier positioning at larger events. Borges' top-50 status ensures direct entry to Masters 1000 events, while Cabral's top-25 doubles ranking provides access to Grand Slam main draws.

For the Jorge sisters, advancement toward the top 200 opens doors to WTA 125 events and qualifying rounds at WTA Tour tournaments, reducing reliance on wildcards. Both players are targeting further progress during the European clay-court season.

Rocha's climb offers a pathway for emerging Portuguese players: consistent results at the challenger level, particularly on clay courts, can accelerate ranking advancement and tournament access.
