The Portugal Judicial Police have dismantled an international cannabis trafficking network operating across northern districts, seizing approximately 900,000 individual doses of processed cannabis and arresting 12 foreign nationals suspected of coordinating the large-scale operation.

Operation Details

Law enforcement coordinated raids across Braga, Porto, and Aveiro districts in what authorities dubbed "Operation Secret Route" (Operação Rota Secreta). The intervention exposed a criminal enterprise that converted industrial warehouse space into cannabis production facilities.

Investigators discovered 190 kg of processed cannabis already packaged in vacuum-sealed bags, indicating preparation for distribution. The packaging standards and preparation methods suggested the group maintained organized protocols for product handling. Alongside the finished product, authorities seized 5,000 live cannabis plants in various growth stages, indicating active, continuous production operations.

The warehouse facilities featured sophisticated environmental control systems for managing light, temperature, and humidity—systems requiring technical expertise and substantial capital investment. According to official communications, the Portugal Judicial Police emphasized the organized nature of the operation.

Arrests and Legal Process

The detained group consists of eight men and four women, ranging in age from 29 to 63 years. All 12 suspects hold foreign citizenship. This international composition reflects broader patterns where transnational criminal organizations recruit operatives across multiple countries to manage production and logistics operations.

The suspects are undergoing judicial interrogation and will appear before the competent authorities to determine appropriate legal measures. Under Portuguese law, cannabis trafficking offenses carry significant criminal penalties.

The Portugal Judicial Police continues investigating whether additional individuals participated in financing, logistics, or distribution activities related to the network.

Context for Residents

This operation illustrates how organized crime networks utilize industrial warehouse spaces in northern districts for large-scale production operations. The sophistication of these operations demonstrates the professionalization of cannabis cultivation activities in the region. Porto and Aveiro's strategic location and industrial infrastructure have historically attracted attention from criminal organizations seeking to establish production and distribution operations targeting European markets.
