Portugal's Portalegre Central Court has convicted 19 individuals in a drug trafficking case, imposing effective prison sentences on 10 members of a network that operated for at least six years. The ruling — announced on Tuesday by the Portugal Public Prosecutor's Office in the Portalegre district — dismantles the narcotics operation and results in the forfeiture of over €37,000 in illicit assets.
The Sentences: A Tiered Response
The court applied a graduated penalty structure based on the severity of each defendant's role. Ten individuals were convicted of aggravated drug trafficking and sentenced to effective imprisonment ranging from 6 to 10 years. These defendants will serve their terms without suspension.
Three additional defendants were found guilty of aggravated trafficking but received 5-year suspended sentences. A single defendant convicted of basic drug trafficking was handed a 4-year-and-5-month suspended term.
The final group — five defendants — was convicted of minor drug trafficking offenses and received suspended sentences ranging from 1 year and 2 months to 1 year and 10 months. While these individuals avoid immediate incarceration, the suspended terms mean any subsequent criminal activity could trigger imprisonment.
Asset Seizure: Following the Money
Beyond the prison terms, the court declared the loss of €37,134.55 in favor of the Portuguese State. According to the Public Prosecutor's Office, this sum represents "incongruent patrimony" detected in the possession of one of the defendants — legal shorthand for wealth that cannot be explained by legitimate income sources.
This financial confiscation reflects Portugal's anti-trafficking strategy: attacking the economic incentives that sustain criminal networks. By seizing proceeds and unexplained assets, authorities aim to make drug trafficking financially unsustainable.
Impact for Portalegre Residents
The conviction removes a significant supply network that had operated in the Alentejo region since 2020. The dismantling is expected to disrupt distribution channels in Portalegre and surrounding municipalities where the network was active.
The 10 defendants sentenced to effective imprisonment will begin serving their terms immediately unless they lodge appeals with the Portugal Court of Appeal in Évora, which has jurisdiction over Portalegre.
The nine defendants with suspended sentences will remain under judicial supervision. Any subsequent criminal conviction during this probationary period could trigger activation of the full sentence.
For residents of Portalegre and surrounding areas, the ruling demonstrates that law enforcement can dismantle long-term trafficking networks through sustained investigative effort. The dismantling of a network that operated since 2020 represents a significant enforcement success in the region.
