Sporting CP faces the imminent departure of captain Morten Hjulmand, with Atlético Madrid leading the race to sign the Danish midfielder for approximately €40M–50M this summer. The club has already secured Silas Andersen from BK Häcken for up to €10M and is pursuing João Palhinha and Sergi Altimira as additional midfield reinforcements, signaling a significant squad overhaul.

Why This Matters:

Hjulmand's departure represents a substantial capital gain for Sporting, with the club expecting between €40M–50M despite an €80M release clause.

Palhinha could return to Lisbon after stints at Bayern Munich and Tottenham, with Bayern reportedly willing to negotiate a reduced transfer fee.

Altimira's deal is nearly done, with Sporting and Real Betis reportedly agreeing on €18M fixed plus €4M in bonuses.

The Hjulmand Exit Strategy

Twenty-six-year-old Morten Hjulmand has been Sporting's midfield anchor since his €20M move from Lecce in summer 2023, playing 65 official matches. The Danish midfielder signed a "gentleman's agreement" with Sporting president Frederico Varandas: if a bid between €40M and €50M arrives, the club will not stand in his way. His contract runs through June 2028 and carries an €80M release clause, but that figure has always been understood as a formality rather than a realistic market valuation.

Atlético Madrid has maintained dialogue with Hjulmand throughout the transfer window and is now poised to formalize an offer. The Spanish club is reportedly prepared to significantly increase his salary and has reached a verbal understanding with the player on personal terms. For Sporting, the timing is opportune: selling now locks in a substantial profit on a player who cost €20M three years ago and allows the club to reinvest before the new season.

Milan's Interest and the Financial Reality

AC Milan has emerged as a potential contender in the Hjulmand saga, partly due to connections to Portuguese football. However, Milan's pursuit faces a fundamental constraint: financial limitations. The Rossoneri have posted modest profits in recent years, and their available transfer budget for summer 2026 is limited, requiring difficult choices across multiple positions.

This financial reality means Atlético Madrid remains the frontrunner, with both the financial capacity and operational urgency to close the deal more readily than Milan.

Sporting's Succession Plan Already in Motion

Sporting CP is not waiting for Hjulmand's exit to be formalized. The club has already committed €7M (potentially rising to €10M with add-ons) to sign Silas Andersen, a 22-year-old defensive midfielder from Swedish side BK Häcken. Andersen is viewed as a long-term investment rather than a direct Hjulmand replacement, which explains why Sporting is pursuing two additional midfielders.

João Palhinha, a Portugal international, has emerged as a key target. The midfielder began his professional career at Sporting before moving to Fulham, Bayern Munich, and most recently Tottenham Hotspur. Bayern has made him available for transfer, and Palhinha is reportedly willing to accept terms to facilitate a return to Alvalade, with negotiations ongoing over a permanent transfer or a loan arrangement.

The second target is Sergi Altimira, a 24-year-old Spaniard currently with Real Betis. According to recent reports, Sporting and Betis have agreed in principle on a deal worth €18M fixed plus €4M in performance-related bonuses. Altimira has reportedly accepted a contract with Sporting that includes a release clause and improved terms.

What This Means for Sporting Fans

The simultaneous departure of Hjulmand and arrival of Palhinha and Altimira represents a calculated move by Sporting's board. Hjulmand's sale will generate a substantial capital gain, enabling the club to fund squad reinforcements. The combined outlay for Andersen, Palhinha, and Altimira could approach €55M–60M in total investment, but that would still leave Sporting with a net positive if Hjulmand fetches the expected €40M–50M.

For supporters, the question is whether these replacements can adequately fill the captain's role. Palhinha brings experience, international pedigree, and familiarity with Portuguese football, though he will be entering the later stages of his career. Altimira is less tested at the elite level, having spent most of his career in Spain, though his technical qualities have drawn positive attention.

The transfer window also underscores Sporting's ongoing operational model as a club that extracts maximum value from acquired talent while reinvesting in younger or less expensive replacements. Whether Andersen and Altimira can sustain that cycle remains to be seen, but for now, Sporting is betting that strategic planning can compensate for the loss of Hjulmand's experience.
