The Portugal Judicial Police have detained five suspects under 21 in connection with a stabbing attack on February 20 in Porto that caused life-threatening injuries to the victim. All face charges of attempted qualified homicide and aggravated robbery, offenses that carry prison terms of up to 20 years under Portuguese law.

The Incident

The assault occurred on February 20 in Porto when a group of eight individuals spotted, cornered, and attacked a victim they encountered by chance, according to the Portugal Judicial Police statement. The attackers used a bladed weapon to inflict multiple stab wounds to the upper torso, requiring emergency medical intervention.

Investigators describe the assault as a coordinated attack by a previously organized group. The Central Department of Investigation and Criminal Action of Porto led the inquiry, resulting in the apprehension of five members of the attacking group. The remaining three suspects were already in custody under preventive detention for unrelated crimes at the time of the incident.

Suspect Profiles

All five newly detained individuals are under 21 years old and reside in Porto and the neighboring municipality of Maia. The Judicial Police characterize them as predominantly unemployed with criminal histories for violent crimes against persons and property, typically committed in organized group contexts.

Three of the eight alleged attackers were already in preventive detention for prior offenses when the February assault occurred.

Legal Charges and Next Steps

The suspects will undergo their first judicial interrogation to determine appropriate coercive measures. Under Portugal's criminal procedure code, judges can impose conditions ranging from bail to preventive detention, depending on the severity of the alleged offense, flight risk, and danger to public order.

Attempted qualified homicide carries reduced sentencing from the standard 12 to 25 years for qualified homicide, while aggravated robbery can add up to 12 years. Combined convictions typically result in significant prison time.

Safety Information for Residents

Residents should be aware that public transport hubs and busy pedestrian areas remain common locations for such attacks, according to Porto Public Security Police (PSP) advisories. Authorities recommend maintaining situational awareness in crowded spaces, especially during evening hours, and reporting suspicious group behavior to emergency services via the 112 hotline.
