Sporting Edges Closer to Champions League Glory with Key Returners, But Arsenal Test Looms in Lisbon

Sporting Lisbon has confirmed that right-back Iván Fresneda will return to the squad for Tuesday night's Champions League quarter-final first leg against Arsenal, while captain Morten Hjulmand will serve a suspension due to accumulated yellow cards, complicating coach Rui Borges' midfield options.

Squad Status Update

Sporting CP's medical staff cleared Fresneda after the defender missed Friday's match due to flu. The Spaniard participated fully in Monday morning's training session at the club's training complex. His return stabilizes the right defensive flank for the European encounter.

Geovany Quenda, the Portugal U-21 international who suffered a foot fracture in early December, returned to Lisbon training roughly a week ago following surgery and rehabilitation. He has been working at full intensity but his involvement on Tuesday is expected to be limited.

Georgian midfielder Giorgi Kochorashvili also trained without restrictions. The 22-year-old, sidelined with a traumatic injury for nearly two months, has resumed full training and recently sat on the bench during Sporting's latest domestic fixture.

Hjulmand Suspension and Other Absences

The most significant setback for Borges is the suspension of Hjulmand, who accumulated his fifth yellow card of the Champions League campaign. The Dane's absence removes the team's defensive midfielder and on-field leader from Tuesday's match.

Also ruled out are Nuno Santos, Luis Guilherme, and Fotis Ioannidis, all sidelined with physical injuries. The timeline for their returns remains unclear.

On the positive side, Luis Suárez returns from a one-match domestic suspension.

Match Details

Kick-off is 20:00 Tuesday at Estádio José Alvalade. The return leg is scheduled for April 15 in London.

The all-German officiating crew will be led by referee Daniel Siebert, with Jan Seidel and Rafael Foltyn serving as assistants. Daniel Schlager will be the fourth official, while Bastian Dankert handles VAR duties with Soren Storks as the assistant VAR.

Pre-Match Schedule

Borges will address the media at 18:00 Monday at Estádio José Alvalade, accompanied by Uruguayan winger Maxi Araújo. Arsenal's press conference follows at 18:45, featuring manager Mikel Arteta and goalkeeper David Raya.

The winner of this quarter-final tie will face either Barcelona or Atlético Madrid in the semi-finals.
