Wildfire in Odemira declared under control after overnight battle
A wildfire that broke out Thursday afternoon in Nave Redonda, in the parish of Sabóia within the municipality of Odemira, was declared dominated at 07h45 on Friday, 25 September, according to the Sub-Regional Command of Emergency and Civil Protection of Litoral Alentejo. The blaze, which prompted the alert at 16h51 on Thursday, entered the resolution phase after burning through scrubland and cork oak forests, spreading as far as the neighbouring municipality of Silves in the Algarve.
By Friday morning at 09h15, 473 operatives remained on the ground, supported by 164 vehicles and two aerial assets, including a Kamov firefighting helicopter and a coordination aircraft. Cooler temperatures overnight aided the containment effort, though authorities continue to monitor for potential reignitions.
Two firefighters injured as vehicle engulfed by flames
The operation was marked by a serious incident involving firefighters from the Portimão Volunteer Fire Brigade. According to Paulo Santos, operations officer at the National Authority for Emergency and Civil Protection (ANEPC), two firefighters suffered minor injuries after an accident with their forest firefighting vehicle, which was subsequently consumed by the flames.
Both operatives received medical attention and have since been discharged. The vehicle was completely destroyed.
Santos told the Lusa news agency that the fire developed with "great speed and intensity", hampered by dry fuel loads and complicated terrain. Dense corridors of scrub acted as thermal accelerants, pushing the fire forward at unusual velocity.
Residents urged to follow authority instructions
With two active fronts reported late Thursday evening, one of which threatened several homes before being brought under control, ANEPC emphasized the importance of public compliance with official guidance.
"We have specialised teams carrying out reconnaissance, identifying the most sensitive points and deciding on evacuation or relocation of populations if necessary," Santos stated.
No residential buildings were confirmed damaged, and no civilian casualties were reported.
Response scaled up through the night
The mobilization grew steadily as the fire progressed:
• 342 operatives with 115 vehicles and seven aerial assets by 22h00 Thursday.
• 439 operatives with 149 vehicles by 05h45 Friday.
• 473 operatives with 164 vehicles and two aerial assets by 09h15 Friday.
The front advancing towards the Algarve was brought under control during the night, allowing resources to concentrate on the remaining areas of concern.
Smaller blaze in Vale Juncal resolved separately
Separately, a vegetation fire that began at 11h04 on Thursday near the EN120 road in Vale Juncal, parish of São Teotónio, also in Odemira, was declared dominated by 14h31 the same day. That blaze burned through scrub, eucalyptus, cork oak, and strawberry tree cover. By 15h15, 119 operatives with 40 vehicles and one aerial unit remained at the scene for mop-up operations.
