Former Portugal international found driving for Uber in Lisbon
A former professional footballer who represented Portugal at Euro '96 has been recognised by passengers working as a driver for the ride-hailing platform Uber in Lisbon. Hugo Porfírio, now 53, was identified during a journey shared on social media, according to reports in late September and early October 2026.
The encounter went viral online, with one video cited by Notícias ao Minuto showing young passengers describing their surprise. The former player's daughter reportedly confirmed his identity in a comment beneath the post.
A career that promised much
Born in Lisbon on 28 September 1973, Porfírio came through the youth ranks at Sporting Clube de Portugal, spending nine seasons at Alvalade. He made his senior debut under English manager Bobby Robson — with a young José Mourinho on the coaching staff — in the 1993/94 season, scoring his first senior goal against Trofense in the Portuguese Cup quarter-finals.
Loan spells at Tirsense and União de Leiria preceded a move abroad to West Ham United in the English Premier League for the 1996/97 season, where he played alongside compatriot Paulo Futre. Four goals and three assists in 27 appearances marked a respectable stint in London before Sporting sold him to Spanish side Racing Santander.
The Benfica years and steady decline
Sporting's Lisbon rivals SL Benfica signed Porfírio from Santander, but his time at the Estádio da Luz proved difficult. He made only six appearances for the first team before being loaned to English club Nottingham Forest, where his form dipped. A second loan, this time to Clube Sportivo Marítimo, gave him regular playing time, but a final return to Benfica again failed to produce the expected performances.
After two seasons with Benfica's B team, Porfírio effectively dropped off the professional football map. He re-emerged three years later with Clube Oriental de Lisboa before ending his playing career in 2007/08 with Saudi Arabian club Al-Nassr.
Brief return to football in coaching
After retiring, Porfírio briefly returned to Sporting's technical staff. He worked as an assistant coach under Ricardo Sá Pinto during the 2011/12 and 2012/13 seasons, also contributing to the B team setup alongside former Portugal international Oceano.
Now, however, Porfírio appears to have moved away from professional football entirely. With no active public social media profiles, little is known about his circumstances beyond the recent passenger accounts. The former winger, once considered one of the country's most promising talents, has become an unrecognised figure behind the wheel for those requesting a ride through the app.
