Suspect held after neighbour fatally shot in Loures land dispute

A 26-year-old foreign national remained in custody this week after the Portugal Judiciary Police (Polícia Judiciária) detained him on suspicion of murdering his neighbour with a single gunshot to the head in Loures. The 41-year-old victim, also a foreign citizen, died at the scene on Saturday, 3 October 2026. The suspect, who fled after the shooting, was caught in the early hours of 4 October following an immediate investigation by the Judiciary Police.

The shooting occurred on Estrada Militar in the Catujal area of Loures, a municipality in the Lisbon District. Authorities traced the motive to a dispute over the land where both men lived. The Catujal neighbourhood has experienced previous conflicts linked to illegal constructions and land occupation, an issue local authorities have struggled to address for years.

Rapid police work led to arrest

The Judiciary Police stated that investigative measures launched immediately after the crime allowed officers to identify the suspect and detain him within hours of the homicide. The force, responsible for investigating serious crimes in Portugal, presented the detainee to the Loures Criminal Instruction Court, where a judge ordered preventive detention.

The case is being prosecuted by the Department of Investigation and Penal Action (DIAP) of the Lisboa Norte – Loures Judicial District. Preventive detention is the most severe coercive measure available under Portuguese law and is applied when authorities believe there is a risk of flight, continuation of criminal activity, or interference with evidence.

Dispute between neighbours turned deadly

According to the Judiciary Police, the conflict that led to the killing stemmed from a disagreement between the two men over the plots of land where their homes stood. Such land disputes, while often beginning as minor grievances, can escalate into serious violence. Police statistics show that in Portugal, the majority of homicide victims know their attackers—a pattern that held true in this case.

The Catujal area has seen significant tension over land use. In July 2025, the Loures City Council demolished dozens of illegal constructions in the neighbourhood, displacing several families. More recently, in August 2026, a separate incident involving gunfire erupted during a family dispute linked to an illegal occupation in the same area.

Context of neighbour disputes in Portugal

Data from the Judiciary Police indicate that in 2024, 92.6% of homicide perpetrators knew their victims, with 16% of all intentional homicides occurring between neighbours. Firearms were used in 25% of cases that year. The Loures case fits this pattern of proximity between victim and aggressor, where arguments over property lines, noise, or land rights can turn fatal.

While the specific details of the disagreement in Loures have not been fully disclosed, authorities confirmed the men lived as neighbours in the same area. The killing adds to a grim tally of neighbour-related homicides in Portugal, a figure law enforcement agencies monitor closely as part of broader efforts to prevent interpersonal violence before it escalates.
