FC Porto signs Chris Smalling as defensive injury crisis deepens
The Portugal-based club announced the signing of experienced centre-back Chris Smalling on Wednesday, adding the veteran defender to their squad one month after the summer transfer window closed. The 36-year-old defender arrives on a free transfer and has signed a contract running until the end of the current season, with an option for a further year contingent on meeting sporting objectives.
Smalling will wear the number 6 shirt at Estádio do Dragão, filling the vacancy left by Brazilian defender Thiago Silva, who returned to Fluminense in the summer after a brief spell in Porto.
Immediate solution for depleted back line
The move addresses an urgent need for head coach Francesco Farioli. With Jan Bednarek suspended for European matches and Argentine defender Nehuén Pérez sidelined by injury, the club faced a severe shortage of recognised centre-backs ahead of their Champions League fixture against Real Betis on 14 October. Polish international Jakub Kiwior now stands as the only available natural central defender for the trip to Sevilla, with midfielder Pablo Rosário likely to be deployed as an emergency replacement.
Smalling brings immediate availability, having been without a club since his contract with Saudi Arabian side Al-Fayha expired in June. The London-born defender made 56 appearances over two seasons in the Middle East under Portuguese coach Pedro Emanuel.
A career forged at the highest level
Before his move to Saudi Arabia, Smalling spent five years at AS Roma, where the Italian club paid €15M to secure his services from Manchester United in 2019. His career in England saw him make 324 appearances for Manchester United, winning two Premier League titles, an FA Cup, and the Europa League.
The defender's path includes a significant connection to Portuguese football management. Smalling played 187 matches under José Mourinho across spells at both Manchester United and AS Roma, winning the Europa League and the Conference League under his guidance. His experience in highly structured defensive systems mirrors the tactical demands of Farioli's approach at Porto.
Recruitment strategy mirrors Thiago Silva move
The signing follows a pattern established last season, when Porto brought in Thiago Silva as a free agent. The Brazilian veteran made 14 appearances during his short stint, helping the club secure the national championship. Smalling now occupies the same squad place, offering similar leadership and experience to help manage the defensive workload.
According to the club's official statement, Smalling's arrival provides "greater security for Farioli when resting regular starters Jan Bednarek and Jakub Kiwior." The manager has been testing younger players in training this week, with several first-team players away on international duty.
Smalling, capped 31 times by England, presented his credentials at the club's training complex on Wednesday morning, with fichas complete in time for him to be registered as a free agent outside the transfer window.
