Portugal's Polícia de Segurança Pública (PSP) has disrupted a major multi-drug production facility in Castelo Branco, arresting a 44-year-old man now held in preventive detention while awaiting trial. The bust exposed far more than a cannabis operation: investigators seized over 27,000 individual doses of narcotics spanning nine different substances, alongside specialized cultivation gear, weapons, and indicators of sophisticated commercial-scale production.

Officers recovered 834 grams of hashish pollen, 1,005.58 grams of hallucinogenic mushrooms, 24 ecstasy tablets, 32 doses of MDMA powder, 41 doses of ketamine, four bags containing LSD stamps, and two bottles of cannabis oil. The diversity and volume suggest the operator was serving multiple customer profiles—from casual recreational users seeking marijuana to those demanding harder synthetic substances and psychedelics.
Investigators also seized an air rifle and a crossbow, raising questions about whether the operation involved protection measures or intimidation tactics common in trafficking networks.
What This Means for Residents
Castelo Branco has emerged as a persistent hotspot for drug enforcement in central Portugal. This latest operation follows three major drug-related arrests in the district earlier this year:
• On 24 April, two men were detained during a domestic violence call; police found an unregistered 8mm revolver, ammunition, a knife, 242 cocaine doses, 45 hashish doses, and 33 MDMA doses.
• Between 2 and 9 March, five individuals were arrested for trafficking, illegal weapons possession, and unlicensed driving. One 30-year-old Castelo Branco resident was caught with 38 cocaine doses, 71 hashish doses, 10 marijuana doses, and two hallucinogenic mushrooms.
• On 22 January, a 61-year-old man—a repeat offender with prior trafficking convictions—was arrested with 603 hashish doses, 54 cocaine doses, 80 marijuana doses, and €350. He was placed in preventive detention.
The pattern reveals both the persistence of local distribution networks and the increasing sophistication of operations. Unlike street-level dealers caught with a few dozen doses, this week's bust exposed an industrial-scale producer capable of flooding the market with tens of thousands of units.
