Benfica midfielder Enzo Barrenechea undergoes successful knee surgery
Sport Lisboa e Benfica have confirmed that midfielder Enzo Barrenechea underwent successful arthroscopic surgery on his left knee on Tuesday, 22 September. The procedure, carried out at Hospital da Luz under the supervision of the club's medical department, treated a ruptured medial meniscus. The Argentina international is now expected to miss between six and eight weeks of competitive action.
The injury occurred following a sprain to the same knee and had already ruled Barrenechea out of the Clássico against FC Porto, which Benfica lost 3–1. Head coach Marco Silva now faces a period without his number five, though the recovery timeline offers a possible return during the first two weeks of November.
What changes for Benfica's midfield
Barrenechea had become a reliable presence in Silva's starting eleven, featuring as a starter in seven of Benfica's first eight matches this season. The 25-year-old, who wears the number five shirt, had formed an effective partnership with Leandro Barreiro in the early weeks of the campaign before the arrival of João Palhinha from Bayern Munich.
The Portuguese international, signed for €14m plus €5m in objectives, made his debut precisely in the position vacated by Barrenechea, who left the pitch injured after 31 minutes against Estoril at Estádio da Luz. Palhinha's presence gives Silva a ready-made replacement, bringing defensive solidity and experience to the central midfield role.

Silva has several alternatives to cover Barrenechea's absence over the coming weeks. The squad depth at his disposal includes:
• João Palhinha: The defensive midfielder offers experience and ball-winning ability in front of the back line.

The injury reduces Silva's rotation possibilities at a demanding stage of the season, but the combined presence of Palhinha and Barreiro ensures the Lisbon club maintains competitive depth. Barrenechea, who joined permanently from Aston Villa last summer after a loan spell — a move that cost Benfica €12m in obligatory purchase clauses — scored twice and provided one assist in 43 appearances during his debut season, winning the Supertaça Cândido de Oliveira.
