Lisbon may frequently grab the international headlines as Portugal's premier technology capital, but a quieter, sun-soaked revolution is currently taking place down south. The Algarve is rapidly transforming from a traditional tourist and retirement haven into a vibrant hub for blockchain and Web3 innovation.

At the heart of this regional transformation is the Algarve Blockchain Community (ABC), which is preparing to celebrate its two-year anniversary this March with a landmark event in Portimão.

To understand how this local ecosystem is taking shape, ThePortugalPost caught up with Clarissa Peereboom, a driving force behind the Algarve Blockchain Community, to discuss the region's technological evolution and what the future holds for digital finance in southern Portugal.

From Small Meetups to a Regional Movement

Launched in 2024, ABC started with a simple, community-driven mission: to provide an open, welcoming environment where residents, established entrepreneurs, and recent expats could demystify blockchain technology together. Today, it stands as one of the Algarve’s most active grassroots technology networks, hosting free monthly events dedicated to education, networking, and deep-dive discussions on Web3.

"What began as a small meetup has grown into a diverse community of people curious about how blockchain technology works and where it might lead," Peereboom shared with us. "Our goal has been to create a space where people can learn from each other, share ideas, and help grow a collaborative technology community in the region."

This growth has been fueled by the Algarve's increasing appeal to remote professionals and developers who want to operate at the forefront of digital assets while enjoying a high quality of life.

The Algarve's Quiet Tech Boom

While major metropolitan centers traditionally draw the bulk of venture capital and startup attention, organizers and local leaders note that the Algarve is successfully leveraging its highly international population to build a distinct ecosystem.

Joaquim Nascimento, President of Algarve Evolution and co-founder of the Algarve Blockchain Community, echoed Peereboom's sentiments regarding the region's upward trajectory:

“The Algarve is quietly becoming a hub for innovation and entrepreneurship. Through ABC, we are connecting local and international talent, fostering collaboration, and helping grow a vibrant tech ecosystem in the region.”

Celebrating Two Years of Innovation in Portimão

This March, ABC will commemorate its two-year milestone by bringing together founders, builders, and curious newcomers in Portimão. The anniversary event will serve as a showcase of how digital innovation is taking shape locally, featuring two primary panel discussions:

  • Web3 Innovation and Growth in the Algarve: A spotlight on the specific entrepreneurs and projects currently building and scaling within the region.
  • The Transition from TradFi to DeFi: An exploration of how blockchain infrastructure is actively transforming traditional digital payments, financial services, and the broader shift toward decentralised finance.

Attendees will have the opportunity to hear from speakers connected to notable blockchain initiatives such as BlockBee, Uplink, and BTCWine, gaining insider insights into evolving technologies and emerging market opportunities.

With a continued global interest in decentralised finance and digital assets, community builders like Peereboom and Nascimento are ensuring that the Algarve remains a vital participant in the conversation about the future of the internet.

Attend the Event

The two-year anniversary event in Portimão is completely open to the public. It welcomes everyone from seasoned Web3 developers to locals who are simply curious about the future of digital money.
